Those of you who attended the 2009 Armory Show are probably familiar with his work. Gottfried Helnweid's metaphor for his latest artwork is dominated by the image of the child in a disturbing and provocative way. Moving away from our everyday assumptions and beliefs in the innocence of a child, Helnwein opens our eyes to a new reality belonging to children with broken pasts, traumatizing experiences and both physically and emotionally scared. Give or take, these compelling images convey a strong message of what some children around the globe experience. A distorted future, a tainted past or just simply having their childhood taken away from them. Its an unfair world out there, and we acknowledge it.
