Exhibition Recap: AIKO's Love Monster

Following the success of her exhibition last year at Brooklynite Gallery, New York's art scene welcomed AIKO once again with her latest exhibition, Love Monster which opened last Saturday, April 18th 2009 at Joshua Liner Gallery. It was a fun exhibition. It brought up old memories of looking through Japanese comic books, manga characters, and cartoons. It is a great approach exploring the topic of women and femininity in general especially since most of the Japanese comic book culture revolves around the various depiction and imagery of women. Her pieces have this retro pop-art look and drew inspiration from the Japanese urban street culture, of which is often considered "kawaii" (it means cute). The silkscreen techniques was apparent and quite impressive. Nevertheless, the Tokyo-born, Brooklyn artist is known for her spontaneous take on street art including wheatpastes and stencils.
