Moroccan born photographer Lalla Essaydi combines photography with Islamic calligraphy using henna. It is quite an eye opener as she creates these imagery of complex female identities that exist in Morocco, and in fact throughout the Muslim world. She is inspired by and uses techniques of the 19th Century Orientalist paintings as an opportunity to paint the faces of these women that rise in the emerging culture of Islamic feminism. Fascinating series; it speaks of freedom, self-expression and most importantly self-evaluation of the artist as a Moroccan woman.
