As a Kurdish Iraqi based in the US, Hayv Kahraman understands the ambiguity of women's identity and role in the modern society. The 28-year old artist gracefully paints her understanding of female oppression in Iraq and expresses her mixed feelings of desire, redemption and salvation. Her works are superb, particularly her latest pieces produced in 2009 with high influences of Japanese prints and Persian art that I love. Very strong pieces, some of which were recently shown and sold at the Gulf Art Fair.
